Our Purpose

The purpose of the Friends of Howard Watkins Scholarship Fund is to recruit students, improve alumni/university relationships, and provide scholarships to incoming and current at Alabama State University:

1. Increase student enrollment and retention,
2. Increase alumni, friends, and supporters’ engagement, and
3. Increase alumni and supporters’ financial contributions and support.

Students attending ASU should enjoy the quality of education he experienced and the support and mentorship that lead to the successful completion of a bachelor’s degree and Air Force commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U. S. Air Force, and successful career.

(1) Recruiting (Reach-one and Recruit-One (R2) – My long-time challenge to alumni.

1. Increase enrollment
2. Improve retention
3. Provide mentorships
4. Provide intern and job opportunities

(2) Alumni Engagement – My outreach to un-engaged alumni

1. Join the alumni association
2. Support athletics, other events
3. Participating in (attending) University convocations
4. Participate in annual giving
5. Inform your potential employer of your commitment to your alma mater during the interview process.

(3) Scholarship

1. Participate in local alumni and university scholarship programs
2. Sponsor an annual scholarship for students attending ASU
3. Established an individual endowment with a name scholarship – Contact the office of instructional advancement
4. Make an additional donation to ASU on Giving Tuesday – I recommend a minimal of $25 if you haven’t giving (In my opion, if every alumnus gives $25.00 annually, ASU will be fine financially).

(4) Obligation

1. Recruit a student
2. Donate
3. Join an alumni organization that contribute to ASU
4. Mentor or sponsor a student
5. Visit and attend a campus event, especially sports events – Great way to support students
6. Fellowship with Hornets
